Privacy Policy for Electrum ETH
Electrum ETH is a non-custodial Ethereum wallet. Your keys stay on your device, and we aim to collect only the minimum information needed to run the software, improve it over time, and keep users safe.
What this policy covers
This Privacy Policy explains how the Electrum ETH project (“Electrum ETH”, “we”, “us”) handles information when you:
- use the Electrum ETH desktop wallet (“the app”),
- visit the Electrum ETH website, docs, and download pages,
- interact with us via support, community channels, or email.
This page is a high-level, plain-language description. Where it differs from our Terms of Use, the Terms of Use take precedence.
1. Wallet app: what we do and do not see
Electrum ETH is designed as a non-custodial client. The wallet runs on your device and uses Ethereum and L2 nodes to broadcast and read transactions. By default, we do not operate a central account system.
We do not collect or store
- Your seed phrase or recovery words.
- Your private keys or signing keys.
- The raw contents of transactions that you sign locally (beyond what is visible on public blockchains once broadcast).
- Your on-chain balances in a way that links them to your name, email, or other off-chain identity.
Data stored locally on your device
The app stores certain data only on your device in encrypted or structured form, for example:
- Wallet descriptors and public addresses.
- Labels, notes, and account nicknames you create.
- Settings such as preferred networks, fee presets, and interface preferences.
This information is not automatically synced to our servers. You are responsible for securing your device, managing backups, and deciding where to store your recovery phrase.
Network and routing data
To operate, the app needs to query Ethereum and supported L2 networks. Depending on your configuration, this may involve:
- Querying node providers for balances, transaction history, and fee estimates.
- Fetching routing suggestions and gas estimates across configured networks.
These requests may expose your IP address and general device information to the node or service you connect to (whether that is run by us, a third-party provider, or your own node). You can usually change node providers in the app settings, including using your own infrastructure.
Crash reports and diagnostics
If the app offers built-in crash reporting or “send diagnostics” options, these are either:
- off by default, or
- clearly described and controlled by you.
Diagnostics may include:
- App version, operating system, and basic device model.
- Non-sensitive logs around the error (for example, which part of the UI failed, but not private keys or seed phrases).
We use this information solely to fix bugs and improve stability.
2. Website, docs, and downloads
When you visit our website, documentation, or download pages, we receive some information automatically, as is standard for most websites.
Server logs
Our web servers may record information such as:
- The pages you request and basic timestamps.
- Your IP address and approximate region.
- Browser type, operating system, and basic device information.
We use this to:
- Keep the site secure and prevent abuse or spam.
- Debug availability issues and performance problems.
- Produce high-level usage statistics (for example, download counts by OS).
Analytics
If we use analytics, we aim for privacy-preserving tools that work without cross-site tracking pixels or invasive cookies. Typical metrics are:
- Which pages are visited and in what order.
- Approximate geography (country or region level).
- Aggregated usage trends over time.
Download verification
When you download Electrum ETH, we may count downloads by operating system and release version. This helps us maintain mirrors, bandwidth, and release quality. We do not bind these download events to your real-world identity.
3. Cookies and local storage
We aim to keep cookies and similar technologies to a minimum and prioritise functionality over tracking.
Types of cookies we may use
- Strictly necessary cookies – used to deliver core functionality (for example, remembering language settings or protecting forms against abuse).
- Functional / preference cookies – used to remember simple choices you make on the site (for example, hiding certain banners once dismissed).
- Analytics cookies – used only where compatible with applicable law and, where required, with your consent.
How to control cookies
You can typically control cookies through your browser settings, including blocking or deleting them. Doing so may affect certain site features but will not affect how the Electrum ETH desktop app works on your machine.
4. Service providers and third parties
To operate and improve Electrum ETH, we may rely on carefully chosen third-party services. These can include:
- Infrastructure and node providers for Ethereum and L2s.
- Hosting providers for the website, docs, and downloads.
- Issue trackers, CI/CD, and crash reporting platforms.
- Support or email delivery services.
We require these providers to handle data in line with appropriate contractual and security standards and use it only for the services they provide to us.
Links to other services
Our website and app may contain links to third-party sites or services (for example, block explorers or community platforms). We are not responsible for their privacy practices. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services you use.
5. How we protect information
Security is a core part of Electrum ETH’s design. While no system can be perfectly secure, we take appropriate steps to protect the information we process.
On your device
- The wallet is non-custodial: keys are generated and stored on your device.
- We do not receive your recovery phrase or private keys at any point.
- You can choose your own backup methods and storage locations.
On our infrastructure
- Access to systems is limited to those who need it to operate the service.
- We use standard security practices such as access controls, monitoring, and log review.
- We regularly update software dependencies and aim to respond promptly to reported vulnerabilities.
6. Legal bases and your privacy rights (EU/UK and similar regimes)
Where applicable data protection laws (such as the GDPR or UK GDPR) apply, we typically rely on the following legal grounds for processing personal data:
- Performance of a contract – to provide the wallet and related services you choose to use.
- Legitimate interests – for example, improving the app, maintaining security, protecting against abuse, and understanding high-level usage.
- Consent – for optional features such as certain analytics or diagnostics, where required by law.
- Legal obligations – where we must retain or disclose data under applicable law.
Your rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights such as the following:
- Right to access the personal data we hold about you.
- Right to request correction of inaccurate data.
- Right to request deletion of your personal data, subject to our legal obligations.
- Right to object to certain processing, or to ask us to restrict it.
- Right to withdraw consent, where our processing is based on consent.
- Right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority in your region.
To exercise these rights, contact us using the details in the “Contact us” section below. We may need to verify your identity before we can respond.
7. Data retention and international transfers
Retention
We keep personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including:
- For as long as needed to provide you with services or support.
- For a reasonable period to analyse and improve performance and stability.
- For as long as required by applicable law or to resolve disputes.
International transfers
Because Electrum ETH is a global project, data may be processed in different countries. Where we transfer personal data internationally and local law requires it, we will rely on appropriate safeguards (for example, contractual protections) to help ensure that your data remains protected.
8. Children’s privacy
Electrum ETH is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe that a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so that we can take appropriate action.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect changes in the app, infrastructure, or applicable law. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, provide additional notice.
10. Contact us
